DESMA Elastomertechnik's global mold and cold runner production achieves record sales in 2024

Klöckner DESMA Elastomertechnik GmbH, headquartered in Fridingen an der Donau, has been developing molding processes for sophisticated rubber and silicone articles of various sizes for almost six decades. One of DESMA's key competencies is that it offers and implements integrated production solutions under one roof. The DESMA injection molding machine is at the heart of this, but the company has also been designing and manufacturing high-quality mold and cold runner systems for sophisticated elastomer products for around 60 years.

Global production of equipment for the rubber and silicone article production

In order to precisely meet the industry-specific requirements for the production of a wide range of rubber and silicone molded articles worldwide, competent local teams of experts with comprehensive process know-how have been available at four of the five locations (Germany, USA, India and China) for many years. Production capacities at all locations have been systematically expanded over the last few years to offer appropriate production options in mold making. A uniform quality standard has been ensured through know-how transfer, standards, and guidelines.

Sustainable molds and technologies for global production of molded articles

The globally networked project teams define the optimum mold concept and the associated production systems regarding productivity and the best possible CO balance in the manufacturing process of the molded articles. With the Ecos PCF Navigator developed by DESMA, the resulting CO₂ footprint of the manufactured article can be determined during the development process, taking all individual influencing factors into account as far as possible, and compared with any different production processes.

With the help of Smartflow flow simulation, sprue systems can be optimally designed to minimize optimization loops.

In addition, the specially developed system solutions, such as the FlowControl cold runner, PressureSense technology and the ZeroWaste ITM pot, offer low-sprue and low-waste injection molding solutions for sustainable article production.

All mold and cold runner systems are optimized ready for production by experienced application engineers at all 4 sites and then handed over to the customer. Each site has a specially equipped technical center with a total of around 20 different injection moulding machines with clamping forces ranging from 1,000 kN to 11,000 kN. The local application engineering teams ensure process development and mold optimization.

Record growth and investments by DESMA in mold production

DESMA mold and cold runner construction has grown continuously in recent years, with almost 80 employees now working in this area worldwide. In addition, production capacities at all locations have been significantly expanded and modernized in recent years. Investments were also made in new production machinery worldwide in 2024. One example of this is a highly efficient 5-axis milling, turning, and grinding center that was recently put into operation in Fridingen. Expansion investments have also already been decided for 2025 to meet the continued strong demand.

DESMA's investments and focus on mould construction and the associated system solutions have proven to be correct in the current economic environment, as record sales and a record order intake were achieved in the mould construction segment this year. This pleasing development is due, among other things, to many projects around the global energy transition and the resulting infrastructure projects.

We already have an order backlog for this year, which gives us a very positive outlook for the year.
